  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC.
    That’s ‘Before Computers’.

Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as

World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all… Archbishop Temple’s School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock ‘n’ Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during ‘The Cold War’…and then

I became ‘a family’. Which meant that I sort of missed the ‘swinging sixties’, but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the ‘Thatcher Years’ I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 56 years of happy marriage.

Here we go again. – Part Seven

Posted by Big John on August 27, 2013

When I look at the horrific pictures coming out of Syria, which often show the plight of the children, I am reminded that, as a child, I also lived in a bomb and missile blasted world, and so can relate directly to their experience.

Now, it would seem, that many of our world leaders (who have never heard a shot fired in anger) are gearing themselves up to drop more bombs and fire more missiles in some show of force which will not help those kids sheltering in the ruins of their homes one little bit ! … In fact, once it starts, we will soon see the inevitable scenes of collateral damage the further murder of civilians, as some of those cruise missiles and bunker-busting bombs …

… find the wrong targets !

Testing times !

Posted by Big John on August 21, 2013

I see that a US study has found that atheists are more likely to have an IQ higher than that of religious believers.

Well I don’t know about that, although I am an atheist, as I have only taken an IQ test once in my life, and that was when I was conscripted at the age of eighteen, and this was to avoid spending two years wearing the hairy brown suit and big boots of an army ‘squaddie’, rather than a less itchy blue suit and comfortable shoes of an aircraftman in the Royal Air Force. I also told a number of ‘porkies’ to the interviewing officer, and although I don’t recall, probably gave my religion as Church of England.

Now, on the strength of passing that test all those years ago, I can’t pretend to be smarter than all of those who believe in one deity or another, but I do have to wonder at many of the faithful’s gullibility.

If you have time, take a look at a few recent examples …

I know that ‘IQ’ stands for ‘Intelligence Quotient’, and who knows, it may be a ‘gift from God’, but if so, he also gifted many of his followers with only …

… half a brain !

What more could you ask for in this hot weather ? … Traffic chaos and no bloody shower  !

Oh ! … and before I forget ‘she who must be obeyed’ has gone to stay with our daughter for a few days …

“Sticks and stones”.. ?

Posted by Big John on August 3, 2013

I have a confession to make …

I have never ‘tweeted’ ! .. In fact, I have never felt the urge to ‘tweet’, and have always found it a little strange that millions of people feel the need to let the whole world know such important information as .. how stinking drunk they were last night, or which cheek of their arse now has a new tattoo: but if it makes them happy, then who am I to belittle what appears to be a harmless addiction ?

What I find even more strange is all the press coverage at the moment about the so-called internet ‘Trolls’ who abuse and threaten ‘tweeters’ with their on-line comments, causing many to have mental breakdowns and even driving some to the point of suicide ! Not funny, I know, but perhaps I am missing something here, as I do not know the workings of ‘Twitter’ and other such social network sites.

Perhaps someone can enlighten me, for surely there is a simple solution if you recognize that you are being ‘trolled’, or is there some rule or device which ensures that all ‘Twitter’ members  …

… must read all that crap ?
