  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC.
    That’s ‘Before Computers’.

Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as

World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all… Archbishop Temple’s School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock ‘n’ Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during ‘The Cold War’…and then

I became ‘a family’. Which meant that I sort of missed the ‘swinging sixties’, but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the ‘Thatcher Years’ I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 58 years of happy marriage.

Could this be a case of ‘blind faith’ ?

Posted by Big John on June 28, 2012

I have a notice on my street door which reads …

So this morning … Ding Dong ! Ding Dong ! … I looked out of the window and saw a post office van across the street. I rushed to the door (those buggers don’t hang about) only to find a grey haired man dressed in black and two elderly ladies similarly attired.

“We would like you to have this” said the man holding out a small leaflet.

“What is it ?” I asked

“It’s an invitation to a little gathering” he replied.

“A religious meeting ?” I questioned pointing to the sign.

“It doesn’t say anything about religion on that sign” said the evangelical nutter. “No, it doesn’t” echoed one of his lady acolytes.

Can there be such a thing as bible bashers’ blindness ?

In Isaiah 42:16 it says … “I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them” …   After meeting this fairly tolerant athiest on a bad day, they might not be too keen to …

…tread my “unfamiliar path” again.

“Bobbing up and down like this”.

Posted by Big John on June 25, 2012

I often wonder if I am living in the 21st century when I read such ridiculous stories as this one.

It shows just what a fantasy world ‘er Maj and her mob live in. Dressing up in all sorts of uniforms and costumes, dishing out ribbons and ‘gongs’ to family members, riding about in carriages and bowing and scraping to each other.

If ever you wanted an example of a system of privilege, snobbery and deference, which is totally out of step with the modern world this has to be it.

OK, so if this bunch of parasites want to play silly buggers by following this arcane etiquette that’s up to them, but the way ordinary people today are still expected to bow and curtsey to the monarch symbolises the insulting arrogance and elitism of so called ‘royalty’.

Today this ‘throwback’ family still enjoy many of the trappings of feudal extravagance. They have over 700 servants and nine royal palaces and residences. No one knows for certain what money ‘er Maj has tucked under the old four poster, but it certainly is in the billions. Yet the royals are still subsidised by the British taxpayer.

I don’t know what Kate Middleton thinks about having to curtsey to those ranked above her, but I bet that she is looking forward to the day when Willy becomes king and they all have …

… to ‘kiss her arse’ !

Remembering real ‘heroes’.

Posted by Big John on June 21, 2012

During my RAF national service back in the 1950’s I served with many World War II veterans. In fact most of the officers and senior NCO’s I worked alongside displayed on their uniforms aircrew wings, brevets and assorted medal ribbons, including Distinguished Service Orders and Distinguished Flying Crosses. One or two still bore the scars which showed that somehow they had escaped from the horrors of a burning aircraft.

On the whole they were an amiable crowd who still tended to treat humble airmen, such as me, as one of the ‘crew’. I remember one officer very well. In fact it would be hard to forget him for he was the typical “wizard prang … jolly good show old chap”.. ex-bomber pilot and came complete with handlebar moustache, pipe and cocker spaniel.

I had not thought of these men for years, that is until I read about the plans to unveil a memorial to those who lost their lives serving with Bomber Command and the reported way in which some of the survivors are being treated.

It seems hard to believe that the people organizing this event would allow a bunch of bloody politicians and bureaucrats to take priority on their guest list, for it should be remembered that at the end of the war the destruction of German cities, which resulted in huge casualties, was something politicians, including Churchill, seemed keen to forget, to distance themselves from and to wipe from history. In fact no campaign medal was awarded to those who flew with Bomber Command, and these brave men were once ignored because of bad publicity, becoming victims of political correctness.

If any of my old ‘comrades’ are still alive and kicking, I hope they make it to the ceremony and get a seat in the front row. They were little more than boys when 55,000 of their mates took off into the night sky, never to return.

This memorial has been funded by the veterans themselves and their supporters. Obviously our government had better things on which to spend our money.

Remind me …

… How many billions is the Olympics costing ?

Ye Olde Olympics

Posted by Big John on June 15, 2012

Well I never thought that I would get a laugh out of the London Olympics, but despite the obscene amount of money wasted on this event I must say that when I read of the plans for the opening ceremony I nearly pissed my pants.

It was last Tuesday morning that the opening ceremony was launched as a vision of rural Britain, which the designer said ..”reflected the reality of the British countryside”, a land of fields, ploughmen, thatched cottages, maypoles, Glastonbury, the Proms and cricket. Oh, come on ! Not even the most ingenuous American tourist would believe that vision of “little old England”.

There will even be real live cows, sheep and horses wandering about. I’m not sure if there will be any pigs. Probably not as they are not very ‘PC’ when it comes to our religious minorities. I just hope that they have plenty of volunteers following these animals with large buckets and spades. There will be real grass, an oak tree, and, although it’s certain to rain, synthetic clouds suspended from wires above the stadium. In other words .. a load of bucolic bollocks !

Oh! .. and before I forget .. There will be a “big bell” …

…  Beijing it ain’t !

Save me from a not so ‘sporting’ summer.

Posted by Big John on June 11, 2012

Well I survived all that ‘Jubilee’ crap. Now I only have to summon up my strength to somehow see out the Olympics.

In the meantime it’s the Euro 2012 football (soccer) taking up hours of TV viewing time and pages of newspaper coverage; and this ‘sporting’ competition is making the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

What idiot decided to make Ukraine a ‘host’ nation when it has a well documented history of racism, with the ‘Human Rights Watch’ recently reporting that “Racism and xenophobia remain entrenched problems in Ukraine” ?

You don’t have to look too far back in history to see that 80,000 Ukrainian Nazi supporters volunteered to join the infamous Waffen SS in 1943, and to see that anti-Semitism has far from disappeared in that part of the world.

I won’t go on as the subject is more than well covered in the press with plenty of pictures of swastika flags and “Sieg Heiling” so called ‘fans’. However I have noticed that Ukraine is sending a team to the London Olympics …

…  Now that could be interesting !

Mad about the Monarchy ?

Posted by Big John on June 3, 2012

I hope that I manage to get through this four day ‘Diamond Jubilee’ holiday nonsense without exploding, but if I hear another commentator say or read in another newspaper that … “The whole country is celebrating” … I may well do so !

What is it with this “whole country” thing ? … I don’t know about elsewhere, but I can say for certain that there is very little sign of the local population around here celebrating the fact that ‘er Maj has been living a pampered and privilaged life for the past sixty years. In fact I have just been for a two mile walk and saw only one house decorated with jubilee ‘tat’. I called in at a pub for a ‘half-way’ pint and saw no sign of a union flag, red, white and blue bunting or specially brewed ‘jubilee ale’.

I keep reading that we ‘republicans’ are only a small minority …

…  I don’t believe it !
