  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC. That's 'Before Computers'. Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all... Archbishop Temple's School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock 'n' Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during 'The Cold War'...and then

I became 'a family'. Which meant that I sort of missed the 'swinging sixties', but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the 'Thatcher Years' I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 50 years of happy marriage.

Dressing up for ‘D Day’!

Posted by Big John on June 10, 2014

When I was a young kid towards the end of World War 2, it was quite normal, on seeing an American serviceman, to shout … “Got any gum, chum?”.

Now President Obama has come in for some ‘stick’ for chewing gum at the recent D Day Commemoration ceremonies in Normandy.

No problem here ! … as most of those brave GI’s would have been doing the same as they stormed ashore on those bloody beaches.

At least he didn’t turn up dressed as a general on one day and as an admiral on another, as our Charlie did, to stand in front of British veterans, with his chest full of ‘Mickey Mouse’ medals given to him by his mum

… Need I say more ?

Any excuse to let the moths out of the dressing up chest!

I always give our Prez a break on this sort of stuff. It wasn’t long ago he quit smoking. Breaks for the medal wearers? NEVER.
