  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC. That's 'Before Computers'. Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all... Archbishop Temple's School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock 'n' Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during 'The Cold War'...and then

I became 'a family'. Which meant that I sort of missed the 'swinging sixties', but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the 'Thatcher Years' I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 50 years of happy marriage.

Why am I reminded of Nero ?

Posted by Big John on August 9, 2011

I’ve just been watching our Prime Minister on the TV news doing a ‘sound bite’ about the riots. The poor sod has had to return from his hols in ‘Chiantishire’ to summon all the other useless buggers back from where ever they are sunning themselves for a special debate in the House of Commons on Thursday. Blimey ! half the country could have burned down by then !

Now I don’t wish to make light of the terrible events which have taken place over the last few days, but don’t you just love all the crap spouted by the politicians at times like these, such as Dave’s … “the full force of the law” … in other words a ‘slap on both wrists’ and not just on one, or Ken Livingstone, who cynically used the riots as an opportunity to plug his campaign to become London’s next mayor by blaming them on government spending cuts.

Ken even included the closing of youth clubs. Does he really believe that the mindless thugs who are burning down buildings and trashing their own communities would sooner be playing table tennis ?

Many of the morons involved in the riots can’t think ahead for more than a  few minutes. They think that stealing TV’s and trainers (sneakers) is fun, never considering that it might be wrong. I’m sure that many of them are illiterate, as a result of being ‘educated’ in a society which has constantly made excuses for their behaviour and has never taught them the difference between right and wrong.

I could go on, but you can read the views of those far more knowledgeable than me on-line and in the newspapers, so I’ll give it a rest, except to ask …

What comes next ? … Bring back ..  The Riot Act ?  … Shoot looters on sight ? … Call out the tanks ?

Whilst I don’t think that they will go as far as that, I’m sure that Dave and his pals will come up with the usual ‘knee-jerk’ reactions and a few reforming ‘gimmicks’, but don’t expect that bunch of ‘fiddlers’ to do anything other than to pontificate, or …

… “bury their heads in the sand”.
