  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC. That's 'Before Computers'. Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all... Archbishop Temple's School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock 'n' Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during 'The Cold War'...and then

I became 'a family'. Which meant that I sort of missed the 'swinging sixties', but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the 'Thatcher Years' I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 47 years of happy marriage.

A triumph for TV trash.

Posted by Big John on November 1, 2007

I know that I have ranted before about not being able to find anything to watch on TV despite having hundreds of channels to choose from … Well now I know why …

It’s because the rest of the country likes watching nothing better than CRAP ! … or so it would seem if last night’s National TV Awards are anything to go by !

Who the bloody hell are Ant and Dec ? … Where do they come from ? … What do they do ? … Why are they famous ? …  I’ve no idea ! … but it seems that they won three awards for presenting such so called entertainment as … I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! … which won most popular reality programme (Can you believe that ’reality shows’ have their own category), and their … Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, one of the shows involved in the ITV £7.8 million phone ‘rip off’, got the award for most popular entertainment programme.

I always thought that Doctor Who was a decent sci-fi show for kids with a bit of an adult following, but I was wrong for it was voted the most popular drama and David Tennant the most popular actor.

That dreadful depressing EastEnders won two awards, beating its rival Coronation Street to the best soap, and also scooping most popular actress for Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater). I notice that these awards refer to ’popular’ and not ‘talented’.

The X Factor took the award for most popular talent show. Isn’t this the show where ’sadists’ can watch deluded would be entertainers being mocked and humiliated ? … and that’s ‘popular’ entertainment ?

Former Hear’Say star Kym Ryder ( star ? who ?) was named most popular newcomer for her role in Coronation Street as … wait for it … Yes, yet another barmaid.

I can’t go on …

Perhaps people should be able to vote for the least popular programmes on TV as …

…  I might be missing something worth watching.
