Terminal Security ?
Posted by Big John on July 3, 2007
Last week I visited France and, as usual, I travelled with my car via ‘Eurotunnel’, which in my opinion is by far the best way to cross The Channel.
I was impressed that security had been stepped up, with all vehicles being tested for explosive substances and many being searched. Passports were also being checked by French border police, which I was pleased to see, as many times in the past I have driven on to the shuttle without any kind of check.
Like everyone this week I watched in horror as a car bomb was driven into the terminal building at Glasgow airport, and suddenly realised that last week, both in England and in France all the security checks had taken place after I had gone through the automatic check-in and after I had visited the shops in the terminal buildings, where dozens of cars where parked close by. All of those vehicles had reached that point without their drivers being questioned or their contents examined.
OK, so a suicide bomber would have a problem trying to get to the tunnel itself, but he could cause mayhem in the surrounding area.
I never gave it much thought last week. I just hope that somewhere some security chief …
… is thinking about it this week.
