  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC. That's 'Before Computers'. Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all... Archbishop Temple's School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock 'n' Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during 'The Cold War'...and then

I became 'a family'. Which meant that I sort of missed the 'swinging sixties', but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the 'Thatcher Years' I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 47 years of happy marriage.

Sick souvenirs.

Posted by Big John on January 2, 2007

Having got over the shock of seeing the gruesome pictures of Saddam’s execution in my morning newspaper and then again on the TV news, I noted the old fashioned ‘hangman’s knot’ used and was reminded of the saying … ‘Money for old rope’.

This saying originates from the days of public executions when executioners used to make a bit of extra cash by cutting up the rope used to hang a notorious criminal and selling it to the crowds as a memento of the event. The hangmen would usually cut the rope into short lengths of two or three inches, and very often would increase their income by cutting up any old rope after the actual execution rope was used up.

Well it seems that nothing changes in this sad old world, for it would appear that pieces of the ’genuine’ execution rope from Iraq have already turned up on ‘ebay’.

…  I wonder how long this one will prove to be ?
