  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC. That's 'Before Computers'. Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all... Archbishop Temple's School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock 'n' Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during 'The Cold War'...and then

I became 'a family'. Which meant that I sort of missed the 'swinging sixties', but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the 'Thatcher Years' I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 47 years of happy marriage.

A chilli surprise.

Posted by Big John on December 11, 2006

I was looking around my local Sainsbury’s supermarket, which as usual at this time of year is not too easy, as every square inch of floor space is piled high with cases of beer and tins of shortbread; when I came across the freezer cabinets full of traditional ‘English’ festive party food  … such as … Thai green curry pancakes … Bruschetta … Chicken Krathong (whatever that is?) … Tampura Prawns … Borek …  and … Nam Jeem Dip !

What the bloody hell ever happened to sausages on sticks, ‘Twiglets’ and pickled onions ?

As I was passing one of the cabinets I noticed two elderly ladies closely examining a pack of fancy ’tartlets’ …

“Ooo ! those look nice Ada” … said one old dear … “What’s the filling ?”.

“Something called … er … JALA … er … PENOs … I wonder what those are ?”… answered Ada … “Shall we buy some and find out ?”

As I walked away I saw the first old girl pick up a pack and drop it in her trolley.

I wondered … Should I tell them ? … No …  Why spoil the fun ?

I would love to be around when …  they pour on the custard …

………         and taste their first mouthful.
