  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC. That's 'Before Computers'. Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all... Archbishop Temple's School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock 'n' Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during 'The Cold War'...and then

I became 'a family'. Which meant that I sort of missed the 'swinging sixties', but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the 'Thatcher Years' I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 47 years of happy marriage.

“One hand giveth …”

Posted by Big John on December 6, 2006

It must seem like good news for anyone who has been strangled by the ‘red tape’ at the local council’s planning department, that a new government report recommends that regulations should be relaxed and that home improvements such as building extensions, garages and converting lofts etc. should be allowed without delay unless neighbours object.

Great ! … Well, no not so great  … For it cannot be a coincidence that these proposals have been announced shortly after we learned that new council tax levels for houses will rocket after being assessed by teams of inspectors who will …  record ? … Yes, you got it ! … costly home improvements such as loft conversions, double-glazing, extensions and garages.

So the bloody ‘jobsworths’ at the town hall who gave you such a hard time when you wanted to add on a room for your granny, will now only be too pleased to let you build whatever you like, in the knowledge that you will pay dearly for it.

By the way, don’t think that you have got away with it if these council ‘gestapo’ don’t come knocking on your door, for the crafty bastards will also be using ’spy in the sky’ satellite surveillance and aerial photography.

Anyone know of a nice line in camouflaged conservatories ?
