  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC. That's 'Before Computers'. Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all... Archbishop Temple's School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock 'n' Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during 'The Cold War'...and then

I became 'a family'. Which meant that I sort of missed the 'swinging sixties', but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the 'Thatcher Years' I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 47 years of happy marriage.

‘Brighton Belles’.

Posted by Big John on November 23, 2006

deck-chairs.jpgWhen looking through my collection of old family photographs I noted that a number of them were taken by professional photographers.

I would guess that the two pictures shown here were taken around 1920 and both show people on the beach at Brighton. The overdressed couple on the left were friends of my mother. How about that three piece suit, watch and chain and white boots; and isn’t that a wonderful hat that the girl is wearing ?

It’s interesting to note that the pair are sitting in deck chairs bearing the name of a photographic studio, for it would seem that beach photographers liked to use their own ‘props’ in those days, as in the picture below.

This photograph shows my great aunt Amy seated between two friends and probably going nowhere, as I suspect that the motorcycle was firmly fixed to the concrete.

If you look carefully at the young man in the deck chair you will see what appears to be a flask in his right hand, and judging by the look on his face …

…  I don’t think that this was a photographer’s ’prop’.
